The Link structure is now finalized after completing all construction milestones, reaching its final length of 226 meters and standing 100 meters above ground level.

The final lift joined the cantilevered structure with the first section of The Link and was executed over the course of four days. More than 55 jacks and strand jacks, and 12.2 Km of strands were required to lift this final portion weighing over 900 tons.

In a highly anticipated event, Ithra Dubai, fully owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai, accomplished a new milestone with the lift of the 192-meter long first section of the Link, now connecting the two towers of the iconic One Za’abeel 100 meters above ground level.

The master real estate developer carried out over 12 days one of the heaviest lifts in the region, weighing in at around 8,500 tons. More than 110 special jacks and heavy-duty strand jacks were used for the operation, calling for a concerted effort by a team of global experts in the fields of construction, engineering and contracting.

The first section of the Link is now in its final position. The second lift of 900 tons scheduled for October, will complete the Link structure to reach its final length of 226 meters and that will top the list of engineering marvels and set to break an international record for the longest cantilevered building in the world.

Dubai, July 7, 2020 – Ithra Dubai’s iconic One Za’abeel development has achieved a major engineering milestone with The Link achieving its final slide at ground level. With this part of the structure now extended to its optimal length at approximately 189 meters, it is ready for its show-stopping engineering feat where it will be lifted 100 meters to its final position connecting One Za’abeel’s two towers. It will then take its shape as a cantilevered sky concourse will be added to the lifted structure and which length will be announced later. Currently, The Link is safely positioned over The Happiness Bridge in Dubai’s Financial District and is undergoing its final technical preparations for its epic ascent later this year.

The Link began to take shape in a series of slides to elongate the structure to its final position before its lift. In this final position, it weighs a total of 7,100 tonnes and is at its heaviest. Made from composite material of steel, it required a significant 500 tonnes of force to accomplish this last slide and was carried out by a team of experts in the field of construction, engineering and contracting.

While still under development, One Za’abeel has earned its reputation as an iconic structure within Dubai’s world-class skyline, with the construction itself garnering international attention. When complete, it will be recognised for its redefinition of the mixed-use offering in the region. Consisting of three building structures including The Link, it will house the finest residential spaces and the world’s first urban resort. From the waterfront apartments overlooking The Creek, to an extension of the Deira Souk, the development will create a bustling hub of life that will add to the already rich tapestry woven by communities past and present. With the exception of the Waterfront Market, which opened in 2017, the first phase of DEP is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2020. Dubai, September 12, 2019 – Ithra Dubai, the leading developer of community-oriented real estate projects, fully owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai, announces the start of the first sliding phase of the World’s Longest Cantilevered Building or “The Link,” on its landmark One Za’abeel development. The commencement of the sliding works will take place on Thursday September 12, 2019.

One Za’abeel is an iconic, high-rise, mixed-use luxury development currently under construction in the heart of the city, standing at the gateway of old and new Dubai. Designed as a destination in its own right that will draw visitors from the emirate and beyond, the development has now reached a new milestone with the launch of the sliding phase of the World’s Longest Cantilevered Building structure.

Suspended over 100 meters above ground level and measuring 210 meters in length, The Link is a panoramic sky concourse that connects the two towers of One Za’abeel. The timeless structure will house a choice of attractions including Michelin starred restaurants, observation decks, and an infinity pool as well as an immersive experience that is now in its final design stages.

Ithra Dubai and its construction partners are building The Link in sections and will be carrying out a sliding operation to move it into place, spanning the Happiness Bridge and linking the two towers, before it is lifted into its final position 100 meters in the air. The sliding phase will officially launch on Thursday September12, 2019 in the presence of Mr. Issam Galadari, Chief Executive Officer and board member of Ithra Dubai, as well as members from the development and construction teams.

On the sliding of The Link, Mr. Galadari said, “We are excited to have reached this critical stage on One Za’abeel’s construction. The Link is an incredible feat of engineering that showcases Dubai’s ingenuity and commitment to creating groundbreaking developments.”

“As the World’s Longest Cantilevered Building, The Link will provide breathtaking 360 degree views of the city, in addition to the project’s prime location for residences, office space and leisure. The sliding phase of The Link is an incredible achievement that demonstrates Ithra Dubai’s talent and ability to overcome engineering challenges,” Galadari added.

Features of The Link’s Construction

Assembly of The Link’s main structure is an impressive engineering exploit. The bridge is constructed of seven steel modules – named Assembly A through G – that are being slid into place before they are lifted to their final position on the building. After connecting the first assembly to a temporary launching nose, The Link will then slide from Tower A towards Tower B.  Ithra Dubai has appointed a sliding and lifting specialist that will use heavy-duty strand jacks capable of generating a pulling force of up to 220 tons per jack to slide both Segment A and the launching nose thirty meters along the temporary platform to the edge of the podium. This will create space to assemble the next segment. At 1,742 metric tons and 51 meters in length, Assembly A is the heaviest individual node to be erected.

The primary nodes for each of the bridge’s assemblies were constructed off site and delivered fully fabricated to reduce on-site welding. Transporting these nodes entailed significant planning, coordination and execution to move the individual elements to the construction site, with the heaviest weighing in excess of 45 tons.

This latest stage in the building’s construction follows the assembly of a temporary launching nose on top of the retail podium level four in Tower A of One Za’abeel.
